Jose Mourinho’s Aspirations to Return to Portugal
Jose Mourinho has expressed his strong interest in returning to manage in Portugal while he believes he is still performing at his peak. Currently 62 years old and with just one year remaining on his contract with Fenerbahce, Mourinho stated,
“I am definitely coming to Portugal. It hasn’t happened yet, but it will,”
during a post-match interview with Sport TV following a preseason match where Fenerbahce defeated Portimonense 2-1 in Albufeira, Portugal.
Commitment to Coaching
Mourinho emphasized that his intention to return is not motivated by a desire for a quiet retirement but rather a commitment to coach while he is still robust and capable.
“I don’t want to come to Portugal to have a golden retirement or at the end of my career. I want to come back at the height of my career, fit and mentally strong. I will definitely return,”
he affirmed.
Coaching Journey and Achievements
His coaching journey began in his homeland, where he led FC Porto to Champions League victory in 2004 before moving to Chelsea. Over his extensive career, which is now in its 11th managerial position, he has accumulated 26 significant trophies with top clubs including Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Roma.
Future Opportunities
When asked whether he preferred ongoing club management or a role with the national team, Mourinho remarked,
“Anything,”
indicating his openness to opportunities. Despite speculation regarding discussions with executives from Portugal’s Football Federation about the national team role ahead of the upcoming 2026 World Cup, Mourinho has previously denied these claims. He acknowledged he has turned down the opportunity to coach Portugal on two occasions in the past. Last season, under his guidance, Fenerbahce finished second in the Turkish Super Lig, trailing behind Galatasaray.
