Jorge Mas Discusses Lionel Messi’s Future

Jorge Mas, co-owner of Inter Miami, expressed his hopes for Lionel Messi to extend his stay with the club beyond his current contract, which is set to expire at the end of the 2025 MLS season.

In an interview with ESPN on Monday, Mas shared that discussions regarding a contract extension are in progress and he is optimistic that Messi will be on the roster to inaugurate the new Miami Freedom Park stadium in March 2026.

“I have declared my aspiration for Messi, our number 10, to lead our stadium’s opening. Ultimately, the decision lies with Messi. We desire for him to conclude his career here with us. While I previously anticipated an announcement by summer, I hope for news to arrive sooner,” Mas stated.

Messi’s Impact on Inter Miami

Since Messi’s arrival on July 15, 2023, he has played a pivotal role in Inter Miami’s success, contributing to victories in the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 MLS Supporters’ Shield, while also helping the team set a record for points scored in a single MLS season.

“We feel a bit selfish for wanting more trophies with Messi on board because his competitive spirit is unmatched; he strives for victory. It is crucial for us to ensure our roster remains top-notch so we can compete effectively.” – Jorge Mas

He added, “We are committed to enhancing the team by signing promising players and potentially acquiring another star next year. While there’s no urgency to finalize Messi’s extension today or tomorrow, we hope to hear his decision soon so we can continue this partnership for years to come.”

Contract Status of Other Players

In terms of other players, Jordi Alba is currently the only former Barcelona star who has secured a new contract with Miami, extending his deal through the 2027 MLS season. Meanwhile, Luis Suárez and Sergio Busquets, who were former teammates of Messi, have contracts that end after the 2025 season.

“Luis is incredible; he puts his heart into every match. His contribution to the squad and to fostering team spirit is invaluable, regardless of his scoring record. Suárez’s decision to extend will rely on his physical condition. As for Busquets, he embodies one of football’s greatest midfielders.” – Jorge Mas

Mas made it clear that discussing the future with Busquets has not yet taken place, but he has made a significant impact and is always welcome to stay. By fall, Mas noted, the roster for 2026 would need to be finalized.

Looking Ahead: Club World Cup Aspirations

As Inter Miami gears up for the Club World Cup, facing teams like Palmeiras, FC Porto, and Al Ahly, Mas emphasized the club’s ambition to ascend as a leading force across the hemisphere.

“We aim to be recognized as the best team, not just within our Concacaf region but also in South and Central America. It is no secret that one of my long-term goals is for Inter Miami to participate in the Copa Libertadores, a competition Messi has not yet experienced.” – Jorge Mas

Looking ahead, Mas has set expectations for the team to successfully navigate the group stage of the Club World Cup and advance to the knockout rounds. The tournament kicks off for Miami on June 14 against Al Ahly at Hard Rock Stadium.
