Jon Sumrall’s Unique Challenge with a Live Alligator
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jon Sumrall, the head coach of Florida, recently experienced quite a unique challenge while participating in a promotional photoshoot that involved a live alligator. The 7-foot reptile, named Helena, was part of the photo session, and her unpredictable behavior certainly kept the coach on his toes.
Unexpected Encounter
Reflecting on the event after his first spring practice, Sumrall humorously recounted the surprising moment he approached what he had anticipated would be a small, manageable creature.
“I envisioned we’d be working with a little baby alligator, something around a foot long for safe handling,”
he explained. To his astonishment, he was met with a much larger alligator, leading to an instinctive retreat reminiscent of his days as a college player at Kentucky.
Tense Moments During the Photoshoot
The photoshoot took a tense turn as Helena strolled around, displaying her natural curiosity — and dominance. Sumrall disclosed that just as he began to feel at ease, the alligator hissed and lunged in his direction, prompting a startled response from him:
“I thought, ‘What the hell is going on? I’m out of here.’”
Thankfully, he didn’t flee, and the session continued as Helena calmed down, allowing the coach to complete the shoot without incident.
Conclusion
Sumrall concluded with a mix of humor and wariness, acknowledging he wouldn’t mind avoiding any further encounters with alligators in the near future, yet recognized the novelty of the experience.
“It was a cool experience,”
he noted, “but not something I’m looking to repeat on my schedule anytime soon.”
