John Stones Opens Up About Injury Struggles

John Stones, the Manchester City and England defender, has opened up about the struggles he faced last season, revealing that he came close to hanging up his boots due to persistent injuries. The 31-year-old endured significant challenges with hamstring and foot problems, which sidelined him for over 30 matches in various competitions. As a result, he hasn’t participated in any matches for the England national team since Thomas Tuchel took the helm in January, although a comeback could be on the horizon against Wales or Latvia this month.

Emotional Toll of Injuries

“The last season was incredibly tough. At times, I seriously considered retirement. I didn’t want to give it up, but it felt like too much, being a professional and doing everything I could, only to keep facing setbacks without understanding why it was happening. It was a very hard situation to be in.”

Reflecting on the emotional toll of his injuries, Stones noted the mental challenge of striving for wellness while repeatedly encountering physical barriers.

“It’s exhausting when you can’t pinpoint the cause of your struggles. It’s different when you can say, ‘I didn’t do this or that,’ because that’s easier to cope with. But when you are pushing yourself and still face hurdles, it becomes a mental drain. I really hope I don’t find myself in that dark place again.”

Return to Form

The defender’s appearances in the Premier League dipped to only 11 last season, a stark contrast from his usual staple role in Pep Guardiola’s defensive lineup. However, he has made progress and is back in form for the current season, showing a strong determination to overcome past hurdles.

“I had a flood of emotions; I wasn’t in the right headspace. Deep down, I probably wouldn’t have gone through with retiring, because I’ve always been a fighter. When Manchester City offered me new challenges, I committed to staying and battling through. Why would I stop that fight now? My competitive spirit remains strong, and the will to win is as fierce as ever.”
