John Daly II Shines in PGA Tour Debut with a 70; Blanchet Leads at Puerto Rico Open

John Daly II’s PGA Tour Debut

At the Puerto Rico Open, John Daly II distinguished himself in his debut on the PGA Tour with a solid opening round score of 2-under-par 70. This event proved to be less challenging for the young golfer compared to the fierce competition faced by his father, John Daly, nearly four decades ago.

Chandler Blanchet Takes the Lead

While Daly II showcased grit on the course, the spotlight was on Chandler Blanchet, who surged ahead with an impressive score of 8-under 64, putting him a stroke ahead of another promising golfer, Gordon Sargent.

Blanchet, after starting with a bogey, demonstrated remarkable resilience by sinking nine birdies to secure the lead. His performance marked a personal milestone as it was his best round on the Tour thus far.

Reflecting on his game, Daly II acknowledged he could have performed even better but was pleased with his crucial saves, including a notable chip-in on the 16th hole.

Emerging Talent in Golf

The backdrop of this tournament saw a wave of emerging talent in the golfing world, with 18-year-old Blades Brown finishing with a 69 after recently competing alongside top golfer Scottie Scheffler at The American Express. Additionally, rising amateur star Miles Russell, aged 17, scored a 71, while fellow 17-year-old Zhou Yanhan from China, who had an impressive seven victories in the previous year’s China Tour, recorded a 72.

Chandler Blanchet’s Journey

Chandler Blanchet, who earned his PGA Tour card last year through strong performances on the Korn Ferry Tour, including two wins, has encountered difficulties at the start of his professional career, failing to make the cut in his first five tournaments. However, he remains optimistic about growth from these experiences.

“I missed a 5-footer right on the first hole and I looked at my caddie and he said, ‘This is our test.’ I handled it well,” Blanchet recounted, showing determination to enhance his mental fortitude moving forward.

Other Notable Players

Additionally, former LIV Golf player Eugenio Chacarra, who gained a sponsorship exemption from the PGA, began his tournament with a score of 73. The winner of the Puerto Rico Open will receive entry into prestigious events such as The Players Championship and the PGA Championship, alongside a coveted two-year tour exemption. However, it is noteworthy that this title does not secure entry into the Masters tournament.
