Joel Embiid’s Return to the 76ers Training Camp Looks Promising

Joel Embiid’s Return to Training Camp

In Camden, New Jersey, the Philadelphia 76ers are optimistic about the return of Joel Embiid for this upcoming training camp, which is set to begin in September. Following a challenging last season marked by injuries and only 19 games played, the star center underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in April.

Team President’s Confidence

Team President Daryl Morey spoke with Embiid just hours before the NBA draft, where the 76ers picked guard VJ Edgecombe from Baylor with the third overall selection. Morey expressed confidence in Embiid’s rehabilitation process:

“He’s fully engaged, really focusing on his recovery. After a meeting with his surgeon this week, we’re pleased to report that everything is progressing as planned. We expect this positive trend to continue.”

Upcoming Season and Preseason Games

This season, the 76ers are set to start training camp earlier than usual, as they prepare for preseason games against the New York Knicks during the Abu Dhabi Games in early October. This schedule emphasizes the need for Embiid’s participation.

Injuries and Setbacks

Embiid underwent meniscus surgery shortly after a major incident in February 2024, where Golden State’s Jonathan Kuminga fell on his leg. Although he managed to return for the playoffs, he did not achieve complete recovery and was sidelined for the remainder of the season, averaging 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists prior to his injury setback. Complicating his season further was a three-game suspension he received for an altercation with a media member.

Struggles Since Winning MVP

Since winning the NBA MVP award for the 2022-23 season, Embiid has faced numerous injuries, participating in only 58 regular-season games and a limited number of playoff contests. He was also the third overall pick in 2014, mirroring the recent draft selection of Edgecombe.

The Emotional Toll

Embiid’s journey has been fraught with numerous injuries since before he turned pro, including a stress fracture in his right foot that sidelined him for two years during his college career, as well as various ailments such as a torn meniscus, bone bruises, and even Bell’s palsy. In December, Embiid opened up about the emotional toll these setbacks have taken on him, stating that he sought therapy during difficult times:

“It’s challenging not to feel down, especially knowing your potential while facing limitations. I’ve learned to focus on the good in life and to surround myself with positivity rather than dwelling on the negatives.”

The 76ers, coming off a disappointing 24-58 season under coach Nick Nurse, are also hoping other key players like Paul George and Tyrese Maxey can avoid injuries to bolster the roster this season.
