Joel Embiid’s Recovery Update
Joel Embiid, the Philadelphia 76ers’ star center, is making strides in his recovery from a right oblique strain sustained during a recent matchup against the Miami Heat. However, he remains off the court as the team announced on Friday that he will undergo another evaluation in about a week. This update was shared by Adam Aaronson of PhillyVoice.
Injury Timeline and Impact
Embiid has been sidelined for three games already due to this injury and is set to miss at least three more according to the timeline released by the team. Throughout the current 2025-26 season, he has participated in only 33 out of 62 games and, as a result of his extended absences, he is ineligible for awards this year.
His recent history has been marred by various injuries; last month, he sat out five consecutive games due to issues with his right knee and shin. The previous season was equally challenging, with Embiid featuring in just 19 games, primarily due to ongoing complications with his left knee that eventually required surgery in April 2025.
Performance When Healthy
Despite his time away from the game, when Embiid does play, he exemplifies his high value to the team, averaging 26.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest this season. His performances include a remarkable 40-point game against the New Orleans Pelicans on January 31. The 76ers have posted a 21-12 record in games he has participated in, but that drops to 13-16 without him, contributing to their current standing of sixth place in the Eastern Conference with an overall record of 34-28.
Injury Concerns for Rookie VJ Edgecombe
In addition to Embiid, rookie guard VJ Edgecombe is also nursing an injury. The third overall pick from last year’s draft is dealing with a lumbar contusion after taking a hard fall during a game against the San Antonio Spurs. Edgecombe was unable to play during the Sixers’ recent victory over the Utah Jazz and his availability for their upcoming game against the Atlanta Hawks remains uncertain.
In his inaugural season out of Baylor, Edgecombe is averaging impressive stats with 15.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game, making him another integral component of a Sixers team hoping to make a strong playoff push.
