Wimbledon Update: Men’s and Women’s Doubles
In an impressive display at Wimbledon, British duo Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski have advanced to the third round of the men’s doubles tournament. The pair, who recently reached the final at the French Open, earned their spot by defeating Nicolas Barrientos from Colombia and India’s Rithvik Choudary Bollipalli in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7). Ranked sixth in the tournament, Salisbury and Skupski are set to face off against Argentine 12th seeds Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni for a chance to progress to the quarter-finals.
Setbacks in Women’s Doubles
Despite the success on the men’s side, British players faced setbacks in the women’s doubles bracket. Sonay Kartal and Jodie Burrage were eliminated after a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia and Germany’s Laura Siegemund. Similarly, Mimi Xu and Ella McDonald fell victim to American pair Sofia Kenin and Caroline Dolehide, losing 6-2, 6-3. Kartal, however, is still in contention for a quarter-final spot in the women’s singles, set to compete against Russian player Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Sunday.
Mixed Doubles and Future Matches
In mixed doubles action, the British team of Marcus Willis and Alicia Barnett faced defeat, falling 7-5, 6-1 to the combination of Mexico’s Santiago Gonzalez and Tereza Mihalikova from Slovakia.
Salisbury, who boasts four major titles in men’s doubles—each alongside American partner Rajeev Ram—teamed up with Skupski earlier this year at the Australian Open, where they exited in round two. Their partnership paid off at Roland Garros, where they reached the finals but were ultimately defeated by Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos. The pair displayed resilience in their recent match, sealing the first set with a break of serve and overcoming three set points in a gripping tie-break in the second set.
Fifth-seeded British duo Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool are also in action in the men’s doubles on Saturday, set to compete against German Hendrik Jebens and France’s Albano Olivetti. Coverage of Wimbledon is extensive, with live broadcasts available through BBC TV, radio, and online platforms including BBC iPlayer and mobile apps.
