Joe Brady reinforces Bills coaching staff by hiring Pete Carmichael as offensive coordinator

Buffalo Bills Coaching Changes

In a significant move for the Buffalo Bills, Joe Brady has initiated the process of shaping his coaching staff by bringing on board Pete Carmichael as the new offensive coordinator, as reported by a source familiar with the matter. While details are still being finalized, the announcement comes following discussions that are yet to conclude with a contract signing. This news was first revealed by the NFL Network.

About Pete Carmichael

Carmichael, who is 54 years old, boasts a substantial coaching background, having spent the majority of his career under the guidance of Sean Payton, including his most recent role as the senior offensive assistant for the Denver Broncos. His productive relationship with Payton dates back to their time together with the New Orleans Saints, where he served as offensive coordinator while Brady worked as an offensive assistant from 2017 to 2018.

With 26 years of experience in the NFL, Carmichael’s career took off in 2000 when he began as the tight ends coach for the Cleveland Browns. He moved on to become the Saints’ offensive coordinator from 2009 until this year, when he departs amidst a restructuring under Payton, who has opted to make changes by releasing offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and wide receivers coach Keary Colbert following a disappointing playoff exit against New England.

Joe Brady’s Vision

Brady, who has recently stepped into the role of head coach after a successful stint as the offensive coordinator for the Bills, expressed admiration for the knowledge he gained during his time with Payton. He referred to it as earning a “doctorate” in offensive strategy. As he prepares for his inaugural season as head coach, Brady plans to maintain control over play-calling for the Bills’ offense, which is driven by quarterback Josh Allen.

Challenges Ahead

However, the Bills still face challenges, as Brady must address a vacant position for defensive coordinator after Bobby Babich‘s departure to take on that role with the Green Bay Packers. Moreover, the special teams coordinator position remains open following Chris Tabor‘s move to Miami. Brady’s proactive approach in assembling his staff will be crucial as he embarks on his leadership journey with the Bills.
