Jim Schwartz steps down as Browns’ defensive coordinator following head coach snub

Jim Schwartz Steps Down as Defensive Coordinator

In a surprising turn of events, Jim Schwartz has stepped down from his role as defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns after spending three seasons with the team. The announcement was made by the organization on Friday, stating that Schwartz submitted his resignation a day prior. Despite leading one of the NFL’s most formidable defenses during his tenure, Schwartz expressed discontent after he was overlooked for the head coaching position, a job many anticipated he would secure following Kevin Stefanski‘s exit.

New Head Coach and Future Plans

On January 29, the Browns opted to hire Todd Monken as their new head coach. During Monken’s introductory press conference earlier this week, he acknowledged having discussions with Schwartz but could not provide clarity on the latter’s future with the team. Schwartz had one year remaining on his contract. Monken also reassured fans and players alike that the defensive structure would remain unchanged, regardless of Schwartz’s resignation, emphasizing the importance of an aggressive approach.

“We’ll continue to allow our defense to attack freely; that’s non-negotiable. The exceptional talent on that side of the ball was a key reason I chose to join the Browns,” Monken remarked, noting that when he prepared for matchups against Cleveland, he had to focus on players like Myles Garrett and Denzel Ward, not just Schwartz’s strategies.

Defensive Achievements

Under Schwartz’s guidance, the Browns’ defense excelled, leading the league in total defense in 2023 and finishing fourth this season. Myles Garrett, in particular, had a standout year, setting an NFL record with 23 sacks and earning the title of AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year for the second time in three years just days before Schwartz’s resignation.

Owner’s Optimism

Browns owner Jimmy Haslam praised the team’s strong defensive players and coaching staff during Tuesday’s press conference, indicating optimism about their future:

“It all begins with our talented players, but having a skilled coordinator and his coaching staff is essential. The leadership among our defensive line, linebackers, cornerbacks, and safeties consists of outstanding coaches. We look forward to what’s ahead for our team.”
