US Open Mixed Doubles Tournament Updates
The upcoming US Open mixed doubles tournament is seeing some significant partnerships reshaped as competitors pull out of the event. Jessica Pegula, the runner-up from last year’s US Open, and British player Jack Draper are set to join forces in this highly anticipated competition. Their pairing comes after their original partners, Tommy Paul and Paula Badosa respectively, withdrew from the tournament.
Partnership Changes and Rankings
Additionally, the top-ranked male player, Jannik Sinner, is also on the lookout for a new partner after Emma Navarro decided to withdraw to compete in a tournament in Monterrey, Mexico next week. The deadline for him and other players to secure a new partner is Sunday, and as long as their combined singles rankings meet the required threshold, they will be able to enter the tournament as one of the 16 teams.
As of the entry deadline, Pegula and Draper’s combined ranking stood at an impressive ninth, qualifying them for a direct entry into the draw alongside others who have met similar criteria. In total, 13 spots have currently been filled for the mixed doubles competition, which is set to kick off on Tuesday with a substantial prize of $1 million awaiting the winning team.
Defending Champions and Notable Entries
Notably, the defending champions, Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, have received a wild card to participate, despite expressing concerns about the new condensed format of the tournament, which lasts only two days and predominantly features top singles talent. Other direct entries include notable names such as Iga Swiatek paired with Casper Ruud, and Elena Rybakina teaming up with Taylor Fritz, among others.
Wild card invitations have also gone to prominent duos like Emma Raducanu with Carlos Alcaraz, and Venus Williams alongside Reilly Opelka, ensuring a star-studded lineup for this year’s event.
