Jessica Pegula Advances to Quarterfinals
Jessica Pegula, the fourth seed and runner-up at the US Open last year, showcased her strong form by sweeping past fellow American Ann Li with a score of 6-1, 6-2, securing her spot in the tournament’s quarterfinals for the second consecutive year. The match took place at the Arthur Ashe Stadium during the day session, where Pegula continued her impressive streak, having yet to lose a set in the current tournament.
Record-Breaking Performance
Notably, the three games she conceded to Li marked the fewest she has ever given up in a US Open match throughout her career. In the course of the tournament thus far, Pegula has only allowed 17 games to slip away, which is her least number leading up to the quarterfinals in any of her eight major championship appearances.
Li’s Struggles
In contrast, Li, who is 25 years old and part of a group of five American women reaching the round of 16, was experiencing her first venture into the second week of a Grand Slam. Unfortunately for her, she struggled against Pegula, achieving a mere 20% win rate on her second serve points while being broken in six out of her eight service games.
Pegula’s Dominance on Home Soil
Pegula’s success on home soil has been remarkable; since 2020, she leads the WTA with 85 match victories in the United States. Next, she is set to compete in the quarterfinals against either Barbora Krejcikova, a two-time Grand Slam winner, or the American Taylor Townsend, who pulled off an upset against fifth seed Mirra Andreeva in her previous match.
