Jessica Campbell Parts Ways with Seattle Kraken

SEATTLE (AP) — Jessica Campbell, who made history as the first female on-bench assistant coach in the National Hockey League (NHL), will part ways with the Seattle Kraken as the team prepares for the upcoming season. The announcement made on Thursday by general manager Jason Botterill revealed that Campbell’s current contract has come to an end, and she is considering pursuing new opportunities elsewhere within the league.

“Jessica has played a vital role on our coaching team, showcasing a profound understanding of the game as well as an exceptional talent for fostering player development,”

Botterill expressed his full support for Campbell’s decision, acknowledging her significant contributions over the past four years. He emphasized that they respect her choice and continue to have faith in her coaching capabilities.

Campbell’s Coaching Journey

Campbell had joined the Kraken staff in 2024, transitioning from her role with the Coachella Firebirds of the American Hockey League (AHL), where she worked under head coach Dan Bylsma. After Bylsma’s dismissal last year and the recruitment of Lane Lambert as new head coach, Campbell remained on the coaching staff despite the changes.

During her tenure, the Kraken struggled to find success, failing to secure playoff berths for two consecutive seasons, with only one playoff appearance since their entry into the league in 2021-22. In contrast, during Campbell’s time with the Firebirds, the team advanced to the Calder Cup Final in consecutive years while she served under Bylsma’s guidance.
