Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis Completes Transition to Super Welterweight, Vacating Titles

Jaron “Boots” Ennis: Transition to Super Welterweight

Jaron “Boots” Ennis is gearing up for a new challenge as he transitions from welterweight to the super welterweight category. This significant move comes as Ennis, who holds the WBA, IBF, and Ring Magazine welterweight titles, prepares for his next bout in a heavier division, a change announced by his promoter, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing, on Thursday.

Ennis’ Impressive Record

The champion, boasting an impressive record of 34 wins and 30 knockouts, ascended to the IBF welterweight title following Terence Crawford‘s recent ascension in the division and his subsequent move up to 154 pounds post his victory over Errol Spence Jr. in July 2023. Ennis defended his IBF belt twice in 2024, culminating in a notable victory over Eimantas Stanionis, where he secured a knockout in the unification match held in Atlantic City this past April. This performance solidified Ennis’ reputation as a rising star in boxing, demonstrating his ability to dominate a recognized contender within the division.

Challenges in the Welterweight Division

Despite his aspirations to unify the welterweight titles, challenges arose as he faced difficulties in securing bouts with other champions, notably Brian Norman Jr. and Mario Barrios, alongside facing mandatory contenders. With the decision to move up, Ennis is likely to vacate his IBF and WBA titles in the near future.

Upcoming Fights and Title Contenders

In the welterweight ranks, Irish boxers Paddy Donovan and Lewis Crocker are set for a rematch to determine the next contender for the now-vacated IBF title after a controversial disqualification in their earlier matchup. The rematch is expected to take place in late September or October in Belfast, either at Windsor Park or back at the SSE Arena, potentially leading to a new champion.

Currently, Shakhram Giyasov stands as the leading contender for the WBA welterweight title, while Rolando “Rolly” Romero recently claimed the WBA “Regular” belt, prompting expectations for him to take on Giyasov in the near future. Meanwhile, Ennis, who previously held the WBA “super” championship at welterweight, is likely to become the mandatory challenger for the WBA super title in his new weight class.

Future Matchups

The current holder of the WBA super welterweight championship is Terence Crawford, although his impending title bout against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez earlier this September could mean he never returns to 154 pounds, positioning Ennis for a possible title shot against interim champion Yoenis Tellez.

After this transition, Hearn has indicated that Ennis would also consider a matchup with Vergil Ortiz Jr. sometime following his debut at 154 pounds, which is anticipated to occur in the next couple of months.
