Jaime Munguia Faces Potential Consequences
Jaime Munguia, a former champion in the junior middleweight division, is facing potential repercussions as his B-sample has tested positive for a prohibited substance following his victory over Bruno Surace on May 4. This result puts the outcome of the fight at risk of being changed to a no-contest, and he might also be subject to a suspension lasting between six months and a year.
Defense and Claims of Innocence
Munguia’s camp has firmly stated that they believe he is innocent, asserting that the positive test result indicates the presence of exogenous testosterone metabolites. In a public statement released on Tuesday, his team reiterated their stance:
“We want to emphasize that this outcome does not alter our conviction that Jaime did not knowingly or intentionally consume any banned substance. We continue to believe this result is due to contamination and are actively investigating the source.”
Impact on Munguia’s Career
The boxer, who currently holds a record of 45 wins and 2 losses with 35 knockouts, expressed shock upon receiving the initial positive test results, prompting him to request the analysis of his B-sample. In light of the findings aligning with his A-sample, he has expressed his willingness to undergo any additional testing to reaffirm his status as a clean athlete.
“I have built my entire career on integrity and have always aimed to compete fairly in boxing, which is my passion. I look forward to swiftly resolving this matter as I am eager to return to the ring and demonstrate that I have always respected the sport, my opponents, and the fans.”
This altercation is particularly noteworthy as it follows Munguia’s rematch with Surace, who previously defeated him by knockout in December of the same year. Now, the boxer must await a decision from the British Boxing Board of Control regarding any disciplinary measures.
