Jaime Munguia Faces Doping Allegations from WBO

WBO Notification to Jaime Munguia

The World Boxing Organization (WBO) has officially notified Jaime Munguia, a former boxing champion, regarding an alleged doping infraction. This notification, dated June 26, requires Munguia to respond within ten days to the claims against him. It has emerged that the fighter reportedly tested positive for synthetic testosterone, a claim his camp has firmly rejected.

Response from Munguia’s Team

In a communication to World Boxing News, Munguia’s team stated, “It is crucial to emphasize that Jaime Munguía has never tested positive for any prohibited substances in over 100 anti-doping tests throughout his professional career until this incident. His history speaks volumes; he has consistently adhered to VADA testing protocols and has built a solid reputation as a clean athlete who upholds the sport’s integrity. We request that the boxing community keeps this context in mind before jumping to conclusions. The positive A-sample result, taken during his training camp—where every other test yielded negative results—was unexpected and troubling for us.”

Following the announcement of the positive result, Munguia’s representatives responded, expressing their belief that contamination during the testing process may have occurred. They maintained, “This result does not alter our stance: Jaime did not knowingly or intentionally consume any banned substance. We are committed to discovering the source of this contamination.”

WBO’s Administrative Review

Amidst the public defense from Munguia’s team, WBO President Gustavo Olivieri has called for further clarification on the matter. The WBO management issued a formal Show Cause Notice to Munguia regarding the doping allegations following his recent match against Bruno Surace. Under WBO regulations, this issue is now subject to administrative review.

The notice specifies that the alleged use of a prohibited substance in connection with his recent bout could lead to serious consequences, including disqualification from the match. The document states, “If found guilty of using illegal or performance-enhancing drugs or stimulants, it will result in disqualification.”

Munguia has been given a period of ten calendar days from the receipt of this notice to present a written explanation or any supporting documents related to these allegations. Not responding within this timeframe could lead to a forfeiture of rights concerning this issue, allowing the WBO to make any necessary rulings.

Potential Consequences

Should Munguia fail to provide adequate justification, his victory over Surace may be overturned to a no-contest. World Boxing News will keep a close watch on this developing situation and will provide updates as they arise, including a request for comments from WBO leadership.
