OHL Suspends Jacob Xu
The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) has imposed a four-game suspension on Kitchener Rangers defenseman Jacob Xu following an incident that occurred during a game against the Sudbury Wolves on Halloween night.
Incident Details
In a third-period clash, Xu became entangled with Jan Chovan, a prospect for the Los Angeles Kings. In an unexpected move, Xu swung his stick overhead, resulting in a strike to the back of Chovan’s head. Fortunately, Chovan was able to continue playing in that game and also participated in Sudbury’s following match against Owen Sound without any reported issues.
Disciplinary Action
After reviewing the incident, the OHL decided disciplinary action was warranted due to the dangerous nature of Xu’s slash, which falls under the category of major penalties. The defenseman, who is eligible for the 2026 NHL Draft, has already served one game of his suspension and will be eligible to make his return on November 15th in a matchup against the Guelph Storm.
Public Reaction
Public reaction to the ruling has been mixed, with some fans questioning whether a four-game suspension is sufficient for such reckless behavior, suggesting that a longer penalty might have been more appropriate.
This unexpected incident has sparked considerable debate within the hockey community.
