His last appearance on the pitch was with Hadjuk Split in his native Croatia following a short stint in the Saudi Pro League with Al Shabab.
Reflections on His Career
In a heartfelt social media announcement, Rakitić reflected on his journey in football, expressing profound gratitude for the experiences it provided him: “Football has given me far more than I ever dreamed possible. It has brought me triumphs and setbacks, invaluable lessons, and lifelong friendships. It offered me a wonderful journey filled with countless stories. Most importantly, it gifted me a loving family and unforgettable moments that will forever reside in my heart.”
Looking ahead, he shared his desire to continue engaging with the sport he loves, stating, “Now, I will cherish football from a different viewpoint, with the same enthusiasm and appreciation, whether it be from the stands, in the office, at home, or wherever life leads me.”
Career Highlights
Rakitić’s professional journey began in Switzerland where he was born to Croatian parents. He rose through the ranks at FC Basel before making a move to Germany’s Schalke 04 in 2007. After four seasons there, he transitioned to Sevilla FC in 2011, marking the beginning of significant personal and professional milestones, including meeting his future wife.
His tenure at Sevilla was marked by two UEFA Europa League titles, but it was at Barcelona that he truly solidified his legacy. Over his six years with the Catalan giants, he amassed a staggering 13 trophies, including four La Liga titles, four Copa del Rey trophies, and a coveted Champions League title.
International Career
Rakitić’s international career also flourished as he earned 106 caps for Croatia before retiring from national duties in 2019. Notably, he played a pivotal role in Croatia’s historic run to the 2018 World Cup final, a campaign that inspired a nation despite their loss to France.
Reflecting on his time in Sevilla, Rakitić stated, “In Sevilla, I found a second home and the love of my life. My daughter was born there, and it was where I claimed my first significant title. We experienced laughter and tears together. Sevilla will always hold a special place in my heart.”
Concluding his tribute, he remarked, “Barcelona has given me everything I ever wished for. It was the club of my dreams, allowing me to fulfill my goals while playing alongside some of the world’s finest athletes, leading to shared victories as a team. My journey with Croatia has been equally remarkable, beginning with my first cap in 2007 and culminating in the World Cup Final, which created a sense of pride and joy that millions experienced. Playing with my national teammates has been one of the greatest privileges of my life.”
