Islanders Hire Pete DeBoer: A Coach with Proven Playoff Success

Coaching Change for the New York Islanders

In a noteworthy coaching shift, the New York Islanders have appointed Pete DeBoer to replace Patrick Roy, who previously led the team to a remarkable 97 victories. As pointed out by New York Islanders statistician Eric Hornick in his Monday morning column ‘The Skinny’, DeBoer arrives with an impressive playoff record—having achieved 97 wins in the postseason throughout his career.

DeBoer’s Coaching Legacy

DeBoer, now beginning his 18th consecutive season as an NHL head coach, carries a strong reputation built over 17 years. His teams have successfully qualified for the playoffs on ten occasions. Although the first half of his career was more challenging—seeing only one playoff appearance in his first five seasons, which culminated in a Stanley Cup Finals loss to the Los Angeles Kings in 2012—his latter years reflect substantial achievement.

Over the past eleven seasons, DeBoer’s teams have reached the playoffs in nine of them, with a notable absence during the dismal 2019-20 season with the San Jose Sharks.

Recent Playoff Success

In his recent playoff journeys, DeBoer has consistently propelled his teams beyond the first round, doing so in nine out of ten appearances, and he has navigated at least to the second round eight times. His latest playoff run was with the Dallas Stars, where they reached the Western Conference Finals in 2025 before bowing out in Game 5.

Challenges Ahead for the Islanders

As he takes the helm of the Islanders, the club currently faces the daunting task of climbing back into playoff contention with four games remaining in the season. Many are asking: can DeBoer perform his magic and guide the team to the postseason despite the odds being stacked against them?
