Islanders Recall Cole McWard Ahead of Match Against Maple Leafs
In preparation for their upcoming match against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the New York Islanders have announced the recall of defenseman Cole McWard from their AHL affiliate, the Bridgeport Islanders. This decision comes as the team gears up for their Saturday evening game scheduled to start at 7 PM ET at UBS Arena.
Cole McWard’s Performance and Background
Cole McWard, a 24-year-old defenseman originally from Fenton, Missouri, has made a significant impact this season in Bridgeport, accumulating 16 points through five goals and eleven assists over 29 games.
Before joining the Islanders, McWard went undrafted after his collegiate career at Ohio State University and subsequently signed with the Vancouver Canucks at the end of the 2022-2023 season. During his brief stint with Vancouver, he participated in five NHL games and netted his first and only NHL goal. His performance last season in the AHL showcased his growth, where he played 57 games for the Abbotsford Canucks, racking up 17 points.
Contract and Lineup Decisions
Earlier this summer, McWard secured a one-year, two-way contract with the Islanders, which includes an NHL salary cap hit of $775,000. The decision on whether he will make his debut with the Islanders on Saturday has yet to be confirmed. Head coach Patrick Roy mentioned after a recent practice that a decision on the lineup, particularly concerning Adam Boqvist’s potential pairing with Scott Mayfield, remains pending. Marshall Warren, who held this position for the past six games, has recently been reassigned to Bridgeport.
Looking Ahead
With the puck drop drawing near, all eyes will be on the Islanders and whether McWard can contribute to their efforts against a formidable opponent.
