Isis Sio’s Emotional Journey After a Medically Induced Coma
In a heartfelt revelation, boxer Isis Sio shared the emotional experience of waking up from a medically induced coma, surrounded by family who were visibly distressed. This moment followed an alarming incident during her recent fight with Jocelyn Camarillo at the Orange Show Events Center in San Bernardino, where Sio suffered a severe knockout, necessitating immediate medical intervention.
After a few days under hospital care, she emerged from the coma, only to see her loved ones in tears, which she initially found bewildering.
“When I opened my eyes, I was confused as to why everyone was crying around me. I saw my mom, Jesse, my dad, and brother on FaceTime,”
Sio recounted in an exclusive update given to World Boxing News (WBN). It was only after processing the situation that she began to comprehend the gravity of her condition leading up to her unconscious state. Doctors had placed her in a medically induced coma as a precaution to safeguard her brain from potential damage after the knockout.
Resuming Everyday Life
The emotional weight of the experience still lingers as Sio begins to resume her everyday life.
“Being able to do simple things again has meant a lot to me,”
she remarked, sharing a poignant moment spent at the beach, which served as a powerful reminder of life’s fragility.
Shortly after her discharge, Sio and Camarillo met up in California, and the fighters reflected on the scary circumstances that surrounded their match. They later posted a photo together on social media, accompanied by a message expressing mutual respect and support.
The Impact on Loved Ones
Sio’s experience extended its impact to those closest to her, particularly her boyfriend, Jesse, who remained by her side throughout her coma.
“He described this as one of the scariest times in his life and felt immense relief when I finally woke up,”
Sio shared. She noted that Jesse had been scheduled to travel back to North Dakota with her coach but instead chose to stay with her, foregoing sleep, food, and even the charging of his phone.
Looking Ahead
Despite the terrifying ordeal, Sio confirmed that her medical team has not recommended an end to her boxing career.
“No, they haven’t said that,”
she stated when asked about any warnings regarding future fights. Instead, she will continue to undergo medical monitoring as part of her recovery process, with follow-up appointments scheduled to track her progress. As she recovers, Sio is left reflecting on her future in the sport she is passionate about, while doctors keep a close watch on her health moving forward.
