Isaac Howard Rejoins the Edmonton Oilers
After a productive spell in the AHL, Isaac Howard has rejoined the Edmonton Oilers, looking to make a greater impact than during his initial stint with the team. The 21-year-old forward was previously awarded the prestigious Hobey Baker Award last season, showcasing a stellar performance at Michigan State with 26 goals and 26 assists in just 37 games. He was acquired by the Oilers from the Tampa Bay Lightning in July, signing a three-year contract that allowed him to vie for a position on the roster.
Performance and Development in the AHL
At the start of the current season, Howard participated in 17 NHL games, where he recorded two goals and one assist. However, the Oilers required an uptick in productivity from their depth forwards, prompting them to send Howard down to the Bakersfield Condors mid-November.
Reflecting on his time in the AHL, Howard expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity it provided.
“I was just excited to get down there and start a different chapter in my pro career. Everyone down in that locker room was awesome, making it easy for me to fit in quickly.”
This adjustment period turned out to be beneficial as he found his rhythm, contributing significantly to the team with 10 goals and 13 assists over 16 games, including a remarkable stretch of two goals and four assists in his last four games.
Despite the disappointment that accompanies a demotion to the minors, Howard recognized that the AHL experience was essential for his growth.
“It’s a great development league,”
he acknowledged, where he received ample ice time, frequent special teams opportunities, and a chance to refine his skills without the pressuring gaze of star player Connor McDavid.
Preparing for the NHL Return
Thus far, Howard feels more equipped and composed as he makes his return, stating,
“It feels like I’m more experienced now and maybe have more calmness coming back up.”
This development is vital for a young player like Howard who needs to adapt to the less consistent minutes typical for a bottom-six player in the NHL.
Entering this next phase of his career, Howard is preparing to cope with the shorter playing durations, ranging from 8 to 12 minutes per game, compared to the 18 to 20 minutes he enjoyed in Bakersfield.
“That’s where you have to stay engaged; you don’t get the regular flow of the game,”
he noted.
Expectations and Future Prospects
The Oilers have a clear expectation for Howard: they do not need him to perform as a standout player but to contribute effectively within his role without hindering the team’s performance. His earlier showing in the NHL showcased his potential to compete at this level, while his time in Bakersfield proved his capability to excel when given the chance.
As the Oilers look to strengthen their lineup, Howard’s successful run in the AHL indicates he is prepared to bridge the gap between his performances in the minors and what is required in the NHL. His recent recall is a testament to his dedication, and how well he utilized his time in Bakersfield speaks volumes about his commitment to honing his craft, proving that the development process is indeed functioning effectively for the young forward.
Only time will tell if these efforts translate to sustained success at the NHL level, but Howard is ready for the challenge ahead.
