Utica Comets Host Free Hockey Camp

The Utica Comets are set to host a complimentary hockey camp for aspiring young athletes in Oneida County, taking place from August 19 through August 22 at the Utica University Nexus Center. This four-day program, named the Rob Esche Free Hockey School, welcomes participants of varying skill levels and presents a valuable chance to learn from experienced coaches and former professional players.

About Rob Esche

The camp bears the name of Rob Esche, a former NHL goalie who played from 1998 to 2012 for teams such as the Phoenix Coyotes and Philadelphia Flyers, and who currently serves as president of the Utica Comets. Esche is dedicated to expanding the reach of hockey across Oneida County, where Utica, the county’s seat, also supports the AHL franchise of the New Jersey Devils.

Registration and Community Impact

Announced on July 22, 2025, the free camp is now open for registration to local residents. Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. expressed his excitement about the initiative, stating:

“Not only will youth in Oneida County benefit from top-notch coaching and guidance, but they will also see role models who demonstrate that aspirations can begin right in our community. I am thrilled to endorse programs like this that fortify our community and nurture our future.”

Coaching Staff

The camp will feature three divisions: Mites, Squirts, and Peewees, with a distinguished coaching staff that includes various veteran players, collegiate coaches, and local hockey figures. Some notable coaches participating include:

  • Rob Esche: Olympian and former NHL goaltender (Flyers, Coyotes), now president of the Comets.
