Inter Miami’s Ambitions for the 2025 MLS Cup
Javier Mascherano, the head coach of Inter Miami, has expressed confidence in his team’s chances of clinching the 2025 Major League Soccer Cup, suggesting the competitive landscape of the league is quite balanced. Currently, Inter Miami occupies the fourth position in the Eastern Conference standings, amassing 56 points from their first 30 matches. There remains a theoretical opportunity for them to secure the 2025 Supporters’ Shield.
Team Performance and Challenges
“We’ve demonstrated throughout this season that we deserve to be seen as serious contenders,” stated Mascherano.
He acknowledged that while the team had hoped for greater consistency, various challenges such as fatigue and injuries have hindered their performance at times. He commented on the tight race within the conference, noting,
“Everything feels very even right now. It’s surprising to see Columbus struggling for a playoff spot; they are a team I really admire, but circumstances like injuries have affected their form.”
Competitive Landscape
Mascherano also pointed out formidable opponents, expressing admiration for teams like the Vancouver Whitecaps, Seattle Sounders, and the emerging San Diego side, which he feels has a playing style reminiscent of Columbus. He particularly noted the significant boost Los Angeles FC has received with the addition of player Son, which he believes has enhanced their competitiveness considerably.
Upcoming Matches and Training Adjustments
This season, Inter Miami has participated in a total of 48 competitive matches, including tournaments like the Concacaf Champions Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup, not to mention their regular MLS fixtures. In September alone, they are scheduled to compete in six matches, leading Mascherano to explain that training sessions will be minimized to prioritize player recovery.
“We trained minimally because some players needed recovery after playing a lot in the last two weeks. Tomorrow we will keep it light to ensure they are prepared for our game on Tuesday,” he mentioned.
Despite already securing a spot in the 2025 MLS playoffs, Inter Miami is determined to rack up wins to guarantee home-field advantage in the postseason.
