Inter Miami CF Prepares for Leagues Cup Semifinal
In the lead-up to the semifinal of the Leagues Cup, which is set for Wednesday evening at Chase Stadium, Inter Miami CF’s assistant coach, Javier Morales, confirmed that the status of star players Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba remains uncertain. Both players are being closely evaluated as the team prepares to face Orlando City.
Player Injury Updates
Messi was unavailable during the quarterfinal matchup against Tigres UANL on August 20 due to a “minor” muscle issue in his right leg. Meanwhile, Alba left the previous game with a knee injury in the second half. Fortunately, both players have resumed training with the team over the past two days after missing the MLS regular-season fixture against D.C. United on Saturday.
Morales shared an optimistic update on Tuesday, stating, “Jordi and Leo were able to complete training, which is a good sign. We’ll assess their conditions as the day goes on and finalize our roster before the match. Leo’s training session was quite positive, and we are hopeful for his inclusion. Nonetheless, we must monitor how they both feel leading into the game. Injuries like these require time to assess, so we will make a decision based on their conditions tomorrow.”
Messi had made a brief comeback on August 16 against the LA Galaxy, where he played a solid 45 minutes, scoring once and providing an assist, but was sidelined again shortly thereafter.
Sergio Busquets’ Milestone
Additionally, midfielder Sergio Busquets is poised to mark his 100th match for Inter Miami since starting with the club in the summer of 2023. He has been fundamental in helping the team secure titles in both the 2023 Leagues Cup and the upcoming 2024 Supporters’ Shield.
While Busquets’ contract extends through the end of the 2025 MLS season, he refrained from speculating on his future following the tournament. He acknowledged,
“I was aware that returning to Spain or Europe was not in the cards after leaving Barcelona. At this point in my career, I’m closer to retirement, but there’s no official word on a contract extension just yet. When there is, I will let you know.”
He emphasized that if necessary, he would consider signing as a non-Designated Player since the designated spots are already filled within the team.
Looking Ahead
As they prepare to host Orlando City, Inter Miami is looking to secure a place in the final of the Leagues Cup, which would earn them eligibility for the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup. The winner of this tournament will meet either the LA Galaxy or the Seattle Sounders in the championship match. Also, head coach Javier Mascherano will be absent from the sidelines as he serves a suspension for a red card received at halftime during the Tigres match.
