Maple Leafs Defenseman Dakota Mermis Injured
In a recent turn of events, the Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Dakota Mermis will be sidelined for at least a week due to a lower-body injury. This setback comes after a collision during the team’s 2-0 victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning, where Lightning forward Gage Goncalves inadvertently struck Mermis’s knee while attempting a hit just three minutes into the last period.
As a result, Mermis has been placed on injured reserve, retroactively effective from December 8, and is expected to be unavailable until at least December 15, when the team faces the Chicago Blackhawks.
Maple Leafs Call Up Henry Thrun
To fill the gap left by Mermis, the Maple Leafs have called up D Henry Thrun from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies. Thrun, who has garnered attention with three goals and nine points in 19 games this season, was acquired from the San Jose Sharks during the summer in exchange for veteran forward Ryan Reaves.
Having played 119 games across his career with five goals and 20 assists, he is now looking to make an impact on the Maple Leafs roster. Thrun participated in Wednesday’s practice as the team gears up for their upcoming match against the Sharks on Thursday.
Additional Challenges for the Maple Leafs
Additionally, defenseman Morgan Rielly missed the same practice due to illness, marking another challenge for the Maple Leafs’ defensive lineup. Meanwhile, goaltender Joseph Woll returned to the ice after a lower-body injury had sidelined him since last Thursday’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes; however, he’s not expected to play until December 11.
This development is crucial for the Maple Leafs as they navigate through their schedule, and further updates are anticipated related to the status of key players like Mermis and Rielly and the implications of any potential roster changes.
