Injury Update: Zach Edey of Grizzlies to Undergo Ankle Surgery, Likely Missing Season Start

Zach Edey Injury Update

Zach Edey, the promising center for the Memphis Grizzlies and a recent All-Rookie selection, has sustained a left ankle injury during a workout. This injury will require surgery aimed at stabilizing the joint. According to sources, this procedure could sideline him for a significant portion of the upcoming 2025-26 season.

Surgery and Future Outlook

Edey’s agent, Mark Bartelstein from Priority Sports, shared with ESPN that after thorough discussions with the Grizzlies and a number of medical experts, they concluded this surgery is the most beneficial route for Edey’s long-term health to ensure he returns to play at full strength without restrictions.

Rookie Season Performance

During his rookie season, Edey averaged 9.2 points, secured 8.3 rebounds, and provided 1 assist per game while boasting an impressive shooting percentage of 58%. Defensively, he made his mark, averaging 1.3 blocks over 66 games.

Recognition and Accolades

His performance earned him 73 first-team votes and 27 second-team votes, making him one of only three players to be recognized on all 100 ballots for the NBA’s All-Rookie Team, alongside San Antonio’s Stephon Castle and Atlanta’s Zaccharie Risacher. Grizzlies teammate Jaylen Wells and Washington’s Alex Sarr were also named to the prestigious roster. Edey’s efforts led to a fifth-place finish in the competitive Rookie of the Year voting, an accolade ultimately claimed by Castle.
