Lewis Crocker Postpones Title Defense
Lewis Crocker, the IBF world welterweight champion from Belfast, sustained a minor hand injury. His manager, Jamie Conlan, emphasized that the issue is “nothing too serious.” As a result, Crocker is now expected to postpone his first title defense against Australia’s Liam Paro until May.
Fight Date and Location
While Paro’s promoter, No Limit, has not officially announced the fight date or location, initial reports suggest they are aiming for early April for the bout to take place on Australian soil. Conlan’s team has already sent a medical notice to both the IBF and Paro’s camp to request additional recovery time for Crocker, shifting the potential date to May, likely at Queensland’s Townsville.
Injury Details
In an interview with BBC Sport NI, Conlan explained that Crocker is experiencing slight strain in a metacarpal, causing approximately a month delay in his fight schedule.
“We just made sure we gave the medical notice to the IBF in a timely manner to allow No Limit sufficient time to find a suitable fight date for everyone involved,”
Conlan stated.
Background on Championship Title
Crocker claimed the championship title in September 2025 with a split decision victory against Paddy Donovan at the iconic Windsor Park in Belfast. His camp had initially hoped to defend the title against mandatory challenger Paro back in Belfast, but negotiations between their teams did not succeed. Consequently, the situation was resolved through a purse bid, where No Limit outbid Crocker’s promoter, Matchroom, by $27,000 (£20,000).
Venue Considerations
The Queensland Country Bank Stadium, boasting a capacity of 25,500, is being considered as the primary venue for the upcoming title fight. Despite the challenge of competing in the opponent’s territory, Conlan views this as an exhilarating opportunity for Crocker.
“This marks back-to-back outdoor headlining events for him; he won his title at Windsor Park and now he’ll be taking to the ring in Australia against one of the toughest fighters in the sport, which will contribute significantly to his legacy,”
he remarked. Conlan is optimistic that after defeating Paro, Crocker will return to Belfast for a significant fight later in the summer.
