Maple Leafs Edge Canucks in Dramatic Shootout
VANCOUVER — In a tense matchup, the Toronto Maple Leafs managed to edge past the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 in a dramatic shootout despite losing key defenseman Morgan Rielly to an upper-body injury during the second period. The nature of the injury remains unclear, but Rielly was unable to participate for the final five minutes of the second period and did not return for the remainder of the game.
Maple Leafs’ coach Craig Berube provided an update, stating, “It’s an upper body injury right now. He will undergo examination tomorrow (Sunday).”
Rielly’s absence was significant as the Leafs scrambled to cover for him, particularly in the third period where they operated with limited defensive pairings.
Rielly, having contributed seven goals and 24 assists over the course of 54 games this season, had been struggling with his defensive metrics, sharing the team’s worst plus/minus rating of -17 with teammate John Tavares. This statistic underscores the broader challenges facing the Maple Leafs, who currently hover near the bottom of the NHL’s Eastern Conference standings.
With Rielly sidelined, the defense corps was heavily relied upon, with Oliver Ekman-Larsson clocking an impressive 28:10 of ice time, closely followed by Jake McCabe, who participated for 27:40. Newcomer Marshall Rifai made his season debut, although he only managed 9:40 of play, as the Toronto defense effectively limited the Canucks to just five shots in the final period.
Goaltender Joseph Woll expressed concern over Rielly’s injury while praising the team’s effort, saying, “Obviously, Mo is a leader on our team and a heck of a player. I hope it’s nothing serious. But I think in the third period, we really didn’t give up much, and the guys did a great job from the forwards all the way through the back end.”
This victory ended a frustrating streak of seven consecutive losses for the Maple Leafs. Though the team may consider making significant changes before the trade deadline, this win offers a brief reprieve and a morale boost amid ongoing struggles in the league.
