Injuries Strike Olympic Hockey: Cirelli and Luukkonen Withdraw, Replacements Announced

Injuries Impact Olympic Participation

Due to injuries sustained during the recent Stadium Series matchup, Tampa Bay Lightning forward Anthony Cirelli will not participate in the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics. Taking his spot on Team Canada is Sam Bennett of the Florida Panthers, who earned the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player during the 2025 playoffs. Cirelli encountered an injury after being checked by Boston Bruins player Mark Kastelic on Sunday and is currently listed as day-to-day.

Goalie Changes for Team Canada

In a related development, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, a goalie for the Buffalo Sabres, has also been sidelined and will miss the Olympic Games. He has been replaced on the roster by Joonas Korpisalo, who plays for the Bruins.

Other Players Withdrawn Due to Injuries

Previously, several players from other countries were forced to withdraw from Olympic competition due to injuries. The USA’s Seth Jones (Florida), Sweden’s Jonas Brodin (Minnesota), and Latvia’s Rodrigo Abols (Philadelphia) were among those who had to be replaced. Additionally, numerous NHL players are now uncertain for the Olympics as they deal with injuries.

Injury Challenges for NHL Players

Notably, Jack Hughes from the New Jersey Devils, Brayden Point and Brad Marchand (Florida), Logan Thompson (Washington), Gabriel Landeskog (Colorado), Elias Lindholm (Boston), Martin Necas (Colorado), Pavel Zacha (Boston), Anton Lundell (Florida), and Alexandre Texier (Montreal) are all facing injury challenges that could hinder their Olympic aspirations.
