Injuries Sideline Lozano and Martín from Mexico’s Gold Cup and Friendlies

Mexican National Soccer Team Update

The Mexican national soccer team has announced that Hirving “Chucky” Lozano and Henry Martín will be absent from the June training sessions, prompted by hamstring injuries. This unfortunate news means both players will miss the upcoming friendly matches against Turkey on June 7 in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Switzerland on June 10 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Furthermore, they will not be a part of the roster for the Concacaf Gold Cup, with the official squad announcement expected on the same day.

Injuries Explained

Lozano’s injury was confirmed by his club, San Diego FC, which conducted medical evaluations revealing a significant left hamstring issue that prevents him from traveling to Mexico City for the national team’s preparations. The winger last appeared in a match for San Diego on May 31, where he played 66 minutes in a 2-0 win over Austin FC before being substituted. This would have marked Lozano’s return to international action for Mexico for the first time since March, when he was sidelined during the team’s successful Concacaf Nations League campaign.

Meanwhile, Henry Martín is also dealing with a left hamstring injury, which has forced him to leave the national training camp. He will be returning to Club América to begin his rehabilitation. Martín was not available for his club’s recent match against LAFC on May 31 due to his ongoing injury issues.

Looking Ahead

It remains uncertain if the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) will bring in replacements for Lozano and Martín ahead of these friendlies. Head coach Javier Aguirre has stated that the upcoming training squad of 35 players will ultimately help shape the final lineup for the 2025 Gold Cup. This tournament is crucial as it serves as a platform for preparation leading up to the co-hosted World Cup in 2026.

Gold Cup Expectations

The Gold Cup is set to take place from June 14 to July 6 in the United States. Mexico, which won the last edition of the tournament in 2023, is eager to bring home another title while facing rivals Costa Rica, Suriname, and the Dominican Republic in Group A, as they continue their drive for championship success.
