Memphis Grizzlies’ Challenging Season
The Memphis Grizzlies are facing a challenging season marred by significant injuries, particularly spotlighted by the ongoing trade rumors surrounding star player Ja Morant. Compounding these difficulties is the absence of young center Zach Edey, who is currently sidelined due to a left ankle injury.
Zach Edey’s Injury Update
Edey, who has not seen action since December 7 in a victory over the Portland Trail Blazers—where he posted 12 points and 10 rebounds—was diagnosed with a stress reaction in his ankle on December 11. He will be reassessed in six weeks, marking another setback in what has been a difficult season for the sophomore player, who managed to compete in only 11 games so far this year.
Previously, he missed the first 13 games while rehabilitating from surgery on the very same ankle during the offseason. In his rookie campaign, Edey participated in 66 games and earned a spot on the NBA All-Rookie team, which makes his current struggles particularly disheartening.
Other Injury Updates
In addition to Edey, the Grizzlies provided updates regarding other players battling injuries, including power forward Brandon Clarke and point guard Scotty Pippen Jr. Clarke has been out following a Grade 2 calf strain suffered on December 20 and is anticipated to be back within the next 4 to 6 weeks. Pippen, who underwent a sesamoidectomy on October 21 to alleviate pain in his left big toe, is also projected to return within the same timeframe.
Current Standings and Upcoming Games
As of now, Memphis stands at 17 wins and 22 losses after 39 games, placing them in a precarious 10th position in the highly competitive Western Conference. Should the playoffs commence today, the Grizzlies would barely qualify for the play-in tournament, edging out the LA Clippers by a single game.
Looking ahead, Memphis is set to face the Orlando Magic on Thursday in Berlin at 2:00 p.m. ET.
