Indiana Quarterback Fernando Mendoza Enters NFL Draft
Indiana’s star quarterback, Fernando Mendoza, has made headlines by officially entering the NFL draft, a move that positions him as a strong contender for the Las Vegas Raiders’ top pick in April. After leading the Hoosiers to an impeccable season, ending at 16-0 and capturing the national championship with a hard-fought 27-21 win over Miami, Mendoza took to social media Friday to share his intentions.
“Let’s get to work,”
he stated alongside an impressive highlight reel. This announcement comes as no surprise, as many anticipated his departure from college football.
Remarkable Season Highlights
The standout junior had a remarkable season, completing 72% of his passes, amassing 3,535 yards, and throwing 41 touchdowns while only facing six interceptions. His rushing capabilities also shone through with seven ground touchdowns. His standout performances in the College Football Playoff—highlighted by eight touchdown passes without a single interception—capped off an impressive college career. A significant play during the national championship was his fourth-and-4 conversion against Miami, which he turned into a 12-yard rushing touchdown, helping extend Indiana’s lead.
Transition to Professional Football
Mendoza’s transition to the professional level was further hinted at when Indiana secured TCU’s Josh Hoover through the transfer portal, signaling they were prepared for Mendoza’s departure. With Oregon’s quarterback Dante Moore opting to stay in school for another season, Mendoza is now widely recognized as the premier quarterback available in the draft.
Las Vegas Raiders’ Draft Position
The Raiders, who ended the 2025 season with a disappointing 3-14 record, earned the coveted No. 1 draft spot thanks to a late-season defeat to the New York Giants. Additionally, the franchise is in the midst of a coaching overhaul, having recently fired Pete Carroll after just one season, intensifying their need for a fresh start under center.
