Indiana Pacers Coaching Staff Changes
In a significant shakeup following their near championship victory, the Indiana Pacers have decided to change their coaching staff, announcing on Friday that they have parted ways with assistant coach Mike Weinar. Head coach Rick Carlisle expressed his admiration for Weinar’s character and accomplishments in a statement.
Long-standing Professional Relationship
Carlisle and Weinar have a long-standing professional relationship dating back to 2008, when they both began their journey together with the Dallas Mavericks, culminating in an NBA Championship in 2011. In 2021, both joined the Pacers’ staff, where Weinar contributed to the team’s impressive Finals run this past season.
“Mike Weinar has been a trusted friend and loyal colleague for over 17 years,” Carlisle remarked.
He highlighted Weinar’s success as a coach, noting his impressive track record, which includes winning two National Championships with Florida Men’s Basketball in 2006 and 2007.
Future Prospects for Weinar
Despite earlier reports linking Weinar to a potential top assistant position with the New York Knicks under new head coach Mike Brown, he reportedly withdrew his name from consideration. Sources suggest that Weinar opted to remain in Indiana for family reasons and to continue his professional relationship with Carlisle, which has been mutually beneficial.
Pacers’ Coaching Staff Moving Forward
Following this development, the Pacers finalized a multi-year extension for Carlisle, solidifying his role after leading the team in what many deemed an unexpected playoff surge. With Weinar’s exit, Lloyd Pierce will continue as the lead assistant coach, supported by Jim Boylen and Jenny Boucek.
The future for Weinar remains uncertain as he departs from the Pacers, leaving behind a successful tenure in Indiana at a time when the team is looking to build on their recent accomplishments.
