Good morning, sports fans! Are you ready for a must-watch showdown in tonight’s Game 7 of the NBA Finals? The Indiana Pacers stand poised to make history, potentially becoming the most unexpected champions in league history.
Now, before jumping to conclusions about calling the Pacers the “$22nd worst” champions ever, hear me out. I may look at this from an outsider perspective being a Pittsburgh native, but I’ve always had a soft spot for Indianapolis, a city that has welcomed me on numerous occasions. Thus, I believe it’s fair to applaud the Pacers’ remarkable playoff journey, even if they could end up being dubbed the least impressive champions by some metrics.
According to a statistic known as the Simple Rating System (SRS), which evaluates a team’s strength based on their regular season performance against their schedule, the current Pacers team ranks as the 22nd-best in their franchise history. That’s significant considering they have never secured an NBA title, despite having claimed three championships in the ABA era.
Historically, teams with similar credentials rarely even make it to the Finals. If they happen to lose tonight, they would rank as the sixth-worst runner-up per SRS measurement.
All of this adds to the intrigue, doesn’t it? If they were to be labeled the least deserving titleholders, it could also mean they put in extraordinary effort to achieve the improbable feat. Their playoff narrative has been anything but easy, having toppled both the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers and Oklahoma City Thunder. The outcome of Game 7 will confirm whether they can complete this remarkable journey.
Devers Hits a Home Run Against Former Team
In crossover sporting news, Rafael Devers, now with the San Francisco Giants, recently brought extra drama to his first game against the Boston Red Sox, the team that traded him. Following a tumultuous exit from Boston due to some friction over a position change and postgame interview responsibilities, Devers delivered his first homer as a Giant against his old team.
LSU Takes Game 1 of the College World Series
In college baseball, LSU pitcher Kade Anderson dazzled on the mound, leading his team to a narrow 1-0 victory over Coastal Carolina in Game 1 of the College World Series. Anderson, a highly-ranked prospect, threw an impressive 130 pitches for a complete-game shutout, halting the Chanticleers’ impressive 26-game winning streak. With the series continuing this afternoon, the Tigers are just one win away from their second championship in three years.
