Iñaki Williams Becomes First Black Captain of Athletic Club and Aims to Challenge Barriers

Iñaki Williams: A Historic Milestone

Iñaki Williams has made history by becoming the inaugural Black captain of Athletic Club, a significant milestone for both him and the club. Born in Bilbao to Ghanaian parents, Williams has not only established his presence in international football representing Ghana but is also a source of pride for many aspiring athletes from immigrant backgrounds. His younger sibling, Nico Williams, recently secured a contract extension with Athletic Club, further solidifying the family’s connection to the team.

Reflections on Leadership

Reflecting on his groundbreaking role as captain, the 31-year-old expressed:

“It means a lot to me. My parents have significantly shaped my journey, and without their sacrifices, neither Nico nor I would be where we are today. We are fortunate to be representatives of those striving for a better life abroad. It’s vital for us to emerge as role models here and within Spain. Coming from humble beginnings allows us to reflect the aspirations of countless immigrants. In a time when far-right ideologies are gaining traction, we aim to use our voices to challenge societal barriers. After eleven years of playing on the first team, it’s a profound joy to lead the club now.”

Nico’s Commitment to Athletic Club

Iñaki also shared his supportive perspective on Nico’s recent decision to commit to Athletic Club amidst interest from major clubs like Barcelona. He noted:

“The simplest choice would have been for Nico to pursue a high-profile move to victory in the Premier League or Bundesliga. Instead, the 23-year-old opted to remain at Athletic, opting to forge a legacy by playing alongside his brother and having their family watch them both at San Mamés.”

Criticism of External Pressures

Despite facing numerous attractive offers and pressure from external parties, Iñaki believes his brother’s decision demonstrates both heart and ambition. He criticized Barcelona’s alleged media tactics aimed at luring Nico away from their club, calling it a “damaging campaign.” He stated:

“We are all aware of the dynamics within football and the attempts to sway opinions, particularly toward Athletic and my brother. While they sought to manipulate the narrative, it’s essential to acknowledge that our club respects confidentiality in its dealings.”

Looking Ahead

As Athletic prepares to embark on the Champions League journey this season, they are set to kick off LaLiga against Sevilla on August 17.
