Ilya Solovyov Reflects on His First NHL Goal and Navigating Recent Changes

Ilya Solovyov’s NHL Milestone

In a memorable moment during his time with the Colorado Avalanche, Ilya Solovyov etched his name in hockey history by scoring his first goal in the NHL. The 25-year-old defenseman achieved this significant milestone on January 10 when the Avalanche triumphed over the Columbus Blue Jackets with a decisive 4-0 win.

Just past the halfway mark of the second period, Solovyov received a cross-ice pass from teammate Parker Kelly, seized the opportunity, and unleashed a powerful wrist shot from the left circle that found its way into the net. The joyous celebration that followed saw him leap into the arms of veteran player Brent Burns, highlighting the emotional weight of the occasion.

Reflections on the Achievement

Reflecting on his achievement months later, Solovyov expressed his appreciation for scoring at home.

“It’s good to score when we play at home,”

he stated to The Hockey News.

“It was a fun memory, and I hope to add more to it tonight.”

Challenges and Transitions

Solovyov’s journey to this pivotal goal was not a simple one. Originally from Belarus, he was picked up off waivers by the Avalanche in October after spending the majority of the previous season with the Calgary Wranglers, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Calgary Flames. During his time in the AHL, Solovyov made quite an impact, finishing the season with 28 points, tallying six goals and 22 assists, which ranked him among the top-scoring defensemen on his team. He had also made brief appearances in five NHL games with Calgary, contributing one assist.

However, his move to Colorado brought its own set of challenges, especially concerning his family who were still in Calgary while arrangements were made for their transition.

“It’s been almost two weeks now since I left my family back in Calgary,”

Solovyov shared upon his arrival in Denver.

“We have a house over there, so they can’t move immediately. We have to deal with moving logistics, cleaning, and preparing everything before they can join me.”

Trade to Pittsburgh and Future Prospects

Just ten days following his landmark goal, Solovyov faced another significant change when Colorado traded him to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Valtteri Puustinen and a seventh-round draft pick in 2026. This latest shift prompted questions about how his family was managing yet another relocation. Solovyov admitted it was likely more challenging for them than it was for him, noting the emotional toll such moves can take.

On the ice, Solovyov seems to have found his footing with Pittsburgh. In his 16 games with Colorado, he recorded one goal and two assists. However, since joining the Penguins, his performance has seen an uptick, as he has already notched four assists in just nine games. This uptick in performance puts him in a position to impress his former teammates when the Avalanche square off against the Penguins tonight.

“I’m just trying to play solid, that’s it. The last few games haven’t gone well for me, so I’m looking to improve,”

he stated as he prepares for the matchup in front of him.
