In a decisive first-round matchup of the Big Ten Tournament, the 10th-seeded Illinois women’s basketball team triumphed over 15th-seeded Wisconsin with an impressive 82-70 victory on Wednesday.

Berry Wallace was a standout for Illinois, contributing 22 points, while Destiny Jackson followed closely with 21 points. Cearah Parchment added to the offensive effort with 14 points, and Lety Vasconcelos, towering at 6-foot-7 and making history as the tallest player in Illinois program history, achieved a personal best with 12 points from the field on an efficient 5-for-8 shooting.

Illinois now boasts an overall record of 20-10, while Wisconsin struggles continue as they face their 10th consecutive defeat, following a previous heavy loss to the Illini, 92-60, just two weeks earlier.

Wisconsin’s Efforts

For Wisconsin, Gift Uchenna led the scoring with a season-high 24 points and managed to shoot 10-for-16, while teammates Kyrah Daniels and Laci Steele contributed 17 and 12 points, respectively. However, Destiny Howell, who usually averages a team-best 14.1 points, struggled significantly, finishing the game with only six points on 2-of-12 shooting.

As the game unfolded, Uchenna sparked a 12-3 scoring run early in the third quarter, narrowing Wisconsin’s deficit to just one point. Nonetheless, Illinois rapidly regained control and expanded their lead by scoring 16 points in the next few possessions, eight of which came from Vasconcelos. By the time the third quarter wrapped up, Illinois had established a solid 62-48 advantage.

A notable statistic for Illinois was their excellent free-throw shooting, converting 83% of their attempts from the line, and outscoring Wisconsin at the charity stripe 24-10. Historically against Wisconsin, Illinois has fared well, having won seven of their last eight matchups, including holding a narrow series lead at 44-43.
