Illinois Triumphs Over Maryland
In a closely contested match on Sunday, No. 11 Illinois emerged victorious against the Maryland Terrapins, clinching a 78-72 win in College Park, Maryland. David Mirkovic was instrumental in this triumph, contributing a robust double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. This win marked a significant moment for Illinois, as they improved their season record to 24-7 overall and 15-5 in the Big Ten, while also securing a bye to the quarterfinals of the upcoming Big Ten Tournament.
Maryland’s Season Struggles
Conversely, the Terrapins, under first-year head coach Buzz Williams, concluded a challenging season, finishing with an overall record of 11-20 and 4-16 in the conference. This year has been particularly disappointing for Maryland, marking their first 20-loss season since 1988-89. Despite their struggles, the Terps put up a tough fight against the Illini.
At one point, Illinois held a narrow 63-62 lead before Ben Humrichous hit a crucial three-pointer, which ignited a 7-0 scoring streak for the Illini.
Although Maryland clawed back to within two points, a successful challenge from Illinois on a disputed out-of-bounds call allowed them to maintain possession with just over a minute remaining. Mirkovic then capitalized on this opportunity, finding space for a layup that increased the Illini’s lead. The Terrapins faced a challenging final possession; Andre Mills, who led Maryland with 30 points, was unable to secure a three-pointer, and Darius Adams failed to complete a layup in the closing seconds while trailing by four.
Illinois’s Performance
Illinois’s challenge was compounded by their shooting struggles, notably from beyond the arc, where they managed only a dismal 5 of 24. Other contributions from the Illini included Kylan Boswell and Keaton Wagler, each scoring 11 points.
With this victory, Illinois not only set a new program record for road wins in the Big Ten but also positioned themselves well for the next stage of the tournament, while Maryland prepares to face 16th-seeded Oregon in the tournament’s opening game on Tuesday.
