Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula Advance to Bad Homburg Semifinals

Swiatek Advances to Semifinals at Bad Homburg Open

In Bad Homburg, Germany, Iga Swiatek, the fourth seed, demonstrated resilience to secure her spot in the semifinals of the Bad Homburg Open. Swiatek’s match against Russian player Ekaterina Alexandrova was interrupted for an hour due to rain, but she maintained her concentration by engaging in crossword puzzles during the delay. Eventually, she triumphed with a score of 6-4, 7-6(5) despite facing challenges, including a total of 37 unforced errors throughout the match.

This tournament marks Swiatek’s sole grass-court appearance leading up to Wimbledon, which is set to begin next week. She commented on her strategy to adapt to the windy conditions, stating,

“Today was all about adjusting… I had to be intense while also being cautious.”

Match Highlights

Swiatek secured her victory by breaking Alexandrova’s serve twice in the first set. Although the rain disrupted the game in the second set, Swiatek came back strong, maintaining her serve to clinch a tiebreaker and setting up a semifinal match against the second seed Jasmine Paolini. Swiatek holds a strong record against Paolini, leading their head-to-head encounters 4-0.

Other Semifinalists

Jasmine Paolini, who finished as a Wimbledon finalist the previous year, also earned her place in the semifinals by defeating Beatriz Haddad Maia with a score of 7-5, 7-5, marking her first straight-sets win over the Brazilian in their four matches. Meanwhile, the tournament’s top seed, Jessica Pegula, progressed to the semifinals after a hard-fought three-set match against fifth seed Emma Navarro, winning 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Pegula will next compete against rising talent Linda Noskova, a 20-year-old Czech player, who dominated third seed Mirra Andreeva in a straight-set victory of 6-3, 6-3.
