Ike Ibeabuchi Rules Out Tyson Match
Ike Ibeabuchi, a former heavyweight contender, has ruled out the possibility of stepping into the ring with the legendary Mike Tyson, focusing instead on his upcoming bout with Nigerian fighter Idris Afinni scheduled for August 23. Speculations about a potential exhibition match between Ibeabuchi and Tyson have circulated for quite some time, surfacing initially before Ibeabuchi’s long absence from the sport due to legal troubles. Now at the age of 52 and eager to resume his post-incarceration career, fans were excited about the idea of witnessing these two heavyweight icons face off.
Respect for Tyson’s Legacy
However, Ibeabuchi swiftly dismissed the idea, emphasizing both the risks involved in boxing and his utmost respect for Tyson’s legacy.
“The idea of an exhibition fight with Iron Mike sparked some fun discussions,” Ibeabuchi shared with World Boxing News. “But I’m not interested in fairy tales; I’m in this for the prizefighting—the real deal. Boxing is inherently dangerous, and I wouldn’t want to risk injuring someone like Mike.”
Upcoming Fight Against Idris Afinni
Focusing on his upcoming fight, Ibeabuchi will be taking on Afinni, who is stepping in on short notice after veteran boxer Danny Williams had to withdraw due to an injury sustained during training. While expressing disappointment for Williams, Ibeabuchi also wishes him a swift recovery.
“It’s unfortunate about Danny; I empathize with him regarding his injury. I hope he heals quickly,” Ibeabuchi said.
Afinni, considered a formidable cruiserweight champion noted for his striking power, poses a new challenge for Ibeabuchi. The late substitution could prove to be a critical moment since Afinni has an impressive knockout rate—83% of his victories come by way of KO, which Ibeabuchi does not take lightly.
“He’s a capable fighter at both heavyweight and cruiserweight,” Ibeabuchi remarked. “A win for him against me would significantly change his life, both in terms of fame and finance in Nigeria.”
High Stakes Ahead
With the fight just around the corner, Ibeabuchi remains aware of the stakes involved for Afinni as he gears up for a crucial showdown.
“Idris is a threat because he has everything to gain and nothing to lose, but I have my sights set on victory and intend to secure it convincingly,” he concluded.
