Ian Wright Defends Jude Bellingham: Critics Struggle with Black Superstars

Defending Jude Bellingham

In a passionate defense of rising football star Jude Bellingham, former England international Ian Wright has suggested that the young player faces prejudice simply for being a Black superstar. Bellingham has recently found himself under fire for his displeasure over being substituted during England’s successful World Cup qualifying match against Albania, leading to accusations that he might be a source of tension within the national team.

Criticism and Talent

Wright, speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, expressed his belief that some critics are intimidated by Bellingham’s exceptional talent and success, saying,

“They just can’t keep up with him. He is triumphant, a true winner who consistently delivers on the pitch.”

He emphasized that, as England breezes through qualifiers, any criticism directed at Bellingham seems to be an effort to distract from the team’s overall positive performance.

Prejudice Against Black Superstars

He continued,

“I think they are unprepared for a Black superstar of Jude’s caliber. He is untouchable in his skills and presence. His playstyle seems to provoke discomfort among certain groups.”

According to Wright, many embrace players like N’Golo Kante, who exemplifies humility, but they react differently to players exuding the same fierce energy as Bellingham or Paul Pogba.

Impact of Boldness

“An outspoken Black player who performs at such a high level might unsettle people because of the inspiration he represents,”

Wright remarked, suggesting that Bellingham’s boldness and confidence unsettle critics.

Reintegration into the Squad

Bellingham’s recent inclusion in Thomas Tuchel‘s squad for matches against Serbia and Albania follows a notable omission from the previous month, linking back to discussions surrounding the player’s on-field conduct that had previously drawn scrutiny. Wright mentioned having prepared Bellingham for potential backlash prior to his reintegration into the squad, sharing the message he sent to the young player:

“I warned him that something was brewing. Unless you excel, it can come crashing down on you.”
