Hurricanes Reassign Joel Nystrom, Clearing Path for Jaccob Slavin’s Return to Action

Carolina Hurricanes Make Strategic Move

The Carolina Hurricanes have made a strategic move by sending defenseman Joel Nystrom to the AHL’s Chicago Wolves, a decision that likely sets the stage for Jaccob Slavin’s return to action.

Jaccob Slavin’s Injury and Recovery

Slavin, 31, has been sidelined due to an upper-body injury incurred during a December 19 incident with Florida Panthers’ A.J. Greer. This setback came just as Slavin was regaining form after missing 28 games due to a prior lower-body issue.

The nature of Slavin’s latest injury, while challenging, has unintentionally allowed him extra recovery time from lingering discomfort that had been present since the preseason. After over a week of practice in a non-contact jersey, Slavin is expected to rejoin the Hurricanes’ lineup imminently, possibly making his comeback in Saturday’s matchup against the Seattle Kraken. This comes as the Hurricanes look to secure their fourth consecutive victory.

Joel Nystrom’s Performance and Future

In light of Slavin’s potential return, the Hurricanes needed to clear a roster spot, prompting Nystrom’s reassignment. At just 23, Nystrom has impressed during his time with Carolina, taking advantage of the numerous injuries plaguing the team this season. His performance over 33 games, where he has accumulated eight points, has demonstrated his capability as a solid NHL defenseman.

Recognizing his potential, the Hurricanes secured him with a four-year contract earlier this year. Despite his success, the ability to send him to the Wolves without the need for waivers allows him the opportunity for continuous development on the ice, a chance that would be limited sitting out games in the NHL. This experience is expected to bolster his growth and enables the Hurricanes to explore more trade possibilities, knowing they have depth in their defensive roster.
