Holger Rune Reveals New Strategy with Blacked-Out Racket Ahead of Davis Cup

Holger Rune’s New Gear

Young Danish tennis star Holger Rune, currently holding the 11th position in the ATP rankings, has sparked curiosity with a unique addition to his gear—a blacked-out racket frame. As he aspires to climb higher and compete with the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner for Grand Slam titles, Rune is open to exploring new equipment that could enhance his performance.

Upcoming Trials

The 22-year-old plans to trial this new racket during the upcoming Davis Cup tie against Spain and the Laver Cup, where the absence of ranking points allows for experimentation without added pressure. In an interview with Danish media outlet DR, Rune shared his thoughts on his latest gear, though he was reticent to disclose specific details, stating:

“It’s hard to put into words. All I can say is no comment. It’s not a secret, and now I’m trying to see how I feel about the Davis Cup and Laver Cup, and then we’ll have to see in the future.”

Equipment and Sponsorship

Rune partially evaded direct questions from BolaVip about his racket, likely due to his current sponsorship with Babolat. He explained:

“It’s a good question… I need to think about how I want to answer that. It’s fine, you’re allowed to ask, but yeah… I’ve tried a few different rackets to see what suits me best. That’s all I have to say about it.”

Consistency and Confidence

This comes after Greek player Stefanos Tsitsipas made a similar attempt to innovate his game with a new racket earlier this year, a strategy that initially showed promise but later encountered challenges for him.

Beyond the equipment shift, Rune aims to enhance his consistency on the court. Discussing his focus ahead of competing against Spain, he acknowledged:

“I feel like I’m lacking some consistency in my identity as a tennis player. Often, I go into matches with a relatively offensive mindset, while other times I come in with a grinder’s mindset. . . . It can also be a bit confusing. I try to keep it as simple as possible.”

Inspired by the high-level play of Alcaraz and Sinner, Rune remains confident in his abilities, stating:

“I also know that I can beat them.”

With the Spanish team missing their star player Alcaraz, Rune will have the opportunity to demonstrate his development and skills; he has already kicked off the Davis Cup tie with a solid win over Pablo Carreno Busta, finishing at 7-5, 6-3.
