Holger Rune Seeks Guidance from Andre Agassi
Rising tennis star Holger Rune has sought guidance from one of the sport’s most celebrated personalities, Andre Agassi, as he prepares for the upcoming 2025 Citi Open in Washington, D.C. At just 22 years old, Rune has navigated through a variety of coaching styles, including stints with Patrick Mouratoglou, who notably trained champions like Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams.
Challenges in Consistency
Despite winning the prestigious Paris Masters in 2022, Rune has struggled to consistently reach the elite level set by contemporaries Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, who have dominated the ATP landscape by clinching the last seven Grand Slam titles. Rune, who once acknowledged his less-than-ideal work ethic, has made significant efforts to improve over the past year.
However, he continues to find himself trailing behind top players like Sinner and Alcaraz, both of whom have solidified their positions as the best in the game, having contested the latest Grand Slam finals at Wimbledon and the French Open, with each player winning once.
Training with Agassi
In an interesting turn, Rune has temporarily teamed up with Agassi for a three-day training session to explore the possibility of a coaching partnership, although Rune has not officially designated the former world No. 1 as his coach yet. The training, which will culminate in Rune’s participation in the Citi Open, is an opportunity for the young Dane to assess potential chemistry with Agassi.
Video footage from their time together shows Rune in a practice session where he exchanges smiles with Agassi in a brief moment of respite.
Future Prospects
While it’s uncertain whether the two will continue their collaboration past these initial days, it’s a reflection of Rune’s frequent changes in coaching relationships. Comparatively, Iga Swiatek and her coach Wim Fissette exemplify a more extended development period, as it took time for their partnership to yield results with Swiatek eventually winning Wimbledon after a struggle early in their relationship.
As Rune seeks to elevate his game and establish a more stable coaching foundation, a longer-term commitment with Agassi could prove beneficial, granting him the time and guidance necessary to fully realize his potential in the highly competitive world of tennis.
