Hofstra University Wins CAA Tournament Title
In a thrilling showdown on Tuesday night, Hofstra University captured the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament title by defeating Monmouth 75-69, marking their return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2001. Freshman standout Preston Edmead played a pivotal role in this victory, achieving a personal season-best of 26 points.
Significant Milestones
With this win, Hofstra, ranked third in the CAA, has secured its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance overall and the first under head coach Speedy Claxton, a Hofstra alum who took the reins for the 2021-22 season.
Game Highlights
The match was dynamic, featuring significant momentum shifts. Early in the game, Monmouth, who entered as the fourth seed, took control and led 18-13 at one point. However, Hofstra clawed back, taking its first lead at 24-23 following a crucial 3-pointer from Cruz Davis. By halftime, they were ahead 35-32.
A late surge from Edmead, including a key 3-pointer that extended Hofstra’s advantage to 64-58 with just over three minutes remaining, kept the pressure on Monmouth. Despite a valiant comeback attempt from the Hawks, who pulled within one point at 66-65, Hofstra maintained composure under pressure. After a clutch jumper from German Plotnikov and free throws from Edmead, Hofstra clinched the win, securing their automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with more successful free throws in the final seconds.

Cruz Davis added 12 points, and Plotnikov contributed a solid 10 points along with 12 rebounds from Silas Sunday in support of Edmead’s scoring effort. For Monmouth, Kavion McClain led with 19 points, while Jason Rivera-Torres and Stefanos Spartalis each chipped in 16. Despite the defeat, Monmouth had a strong February, ending their season with a five-game winning streak before this championship loss.
