Hilary Knight Transferred to Detroit’s PWHL Expansion Team in Major Sign-and-Trade Deal

Hilary Knight’s Trade to Detroit

In a significant move within the Premier Women’s Hockey League (PWHL), acclaimed player Hilary Knight has been traded to Detroit’s expansion team as part of a sign-and-trade agreement, according to reports. An anonymous source familiar with the situation, who was granted confidentiality to discuss the trade, shared details with The Associated Press, stating that Knight is poised to first secure a foundational contract with the Las Vegas franchise. Subsequently, she will be sent to Detroit in exchange for the first-round pick in the upcoming draft. This trade is expected to become official after the PWHL’s current trade freeze ends on June 16, just prior to the draft.

Knight’s Career Highlights

Knight, 36, is a standout athlete, celebrated for her remarkable achievements including five stints as a U.S. Olympian. Most recently, she captained Team USA to a gold medal at the Milan Cortina Games in February, where she played a crucial role in a thrilling championship match against Canada. Despite announcing that the Milan Games would conclude her Olympic journey, Knight has expressed intentions to continue competing professionally.

This marks the second consecutive offseason where Knight is switching teams in the PWHL. After beginning her career with the Boston Fleet, she played two seasons before signing with the newly formed Seattle Torrent, aiming to reduce travel time, given her offseason base in Idaho. Unfortunately, the Torrent could only retain three players due to expansion guidelines, which led to Knight being left unprotected. The players preserved by Seattle were forward Alex Carpenter, defender Anna Wilgren, and goalie Hannah Murphy.

Financial Implications and Team Dynamics

On the financial front, Knight stands to benefit significantly from the deal, as foundational contracts in the PWHL assure players a minimum salary of $100,000 annually. Knight’s previous season salary was $106,090. With the league allowing each expansion team to offer one foundational deal, Las Vegas opted to utilize its opportunity on Knight, while Detroit had recently committed its offer to Toronto forward Daryl Watts.

Joining the Detroit team, Knight will play alongside familiar faces, including her gold medal-winning teammates Britta Curl-Salemme, Hannah Bilka, and defender Cayla Barnes, all signed during the expansion phase. Additionally, she will reunite with her former Olympic assistant coach, Josh Sciba, who has recently accepted the head coaching position for Detroit.

Adding further depth to the franchise, Detroit recently secured forward Jesse Compher, who earned a silver medal while representing the U.S. at the Beijing Olympics, filling their available roster spots.

Performance and Personal Milestones

In her previous season, Knight wrapped up with a performance of five goals and 14 points in 22 games, missing a portion of the season due to a lower body injury. The previous year, she excelled to rank among the league leaders, amassing 29 points with 15 goals and 14 assists. Her career in the PWHL has seen her accumulate a total of 54 points (26 goals and 28 assists) across 76 games.

This trade comes on the heels of a personal triumph for Knight, as she got engaged to Olympic speedskater Brittany Bowe just a day before clinching gold in Italy. Additionally, her goal in the finals against Canada marked her 15th career Olympic goal and contributed to her record-setting 33 Olympic points, both of which are U.S. records. Knight’s illustrious career also boasts two Olympic golds, three silvers, and ten world championship gold medals, leading in tournament history with 67 goals, 53 assists, and a total of 120 points.
