Henry Patten’s Controversial Fine at Wimbledon
Henry Patten, the reigning doubles champion at Wimbledon, plans to contest a substantial fine of £9,200 imposed on him during the 2025 tournament. This penalty was announced on June 29 after an alleged confrontation between Patten and a staff member at an off-site training facility, reportedly triggered when employees attempted to curtail his practice session.
Patten’s Response to the Fine
The world’s third-ranked doubles player expressed his discontent with the ruling and the lack of thoroughness in the investigation that preceded the fine. In an interview with the i Paper, Patten stated:
“I am disappointed that Wimbledon thought it appropriate to disclose this fine to the media without indicating my appeal, which creates an unfair and inaccurate perception of the incident.”
He insists that the procedures followed were not reasonable or just, expressing frustration that he must focus on this matter rather than his upcoming matches.
Upcoming Matches and Previous Success
As he prepares to compete against the British team of Lloyd Glasspool and Julian Cash in the quarter-finals scheduled for July 9, Patten reflected on his previous victories, including his success last year with partner Harri Heliovaara.
Wimbledon’s Fine Accumulation
Wimbledon has accumulated around £37,000 in fines during the 2025 tournament thus far, from various infractions such as foul language, equipment damage, and unsportsmanlike behavior. High-profile players like Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios have also faced significant fines in recent years, highlighting the strict enforcement of conduct rules during the championships.
Patten’s appeal adds another layer of tension to his performance at this prestigious event, as he navigates the challenges of competition amid controversies.
