Erling Haaland’s Record-Breaking Journey
Erling Haaland is on the verge of breaking another significant milestone in the UEFA Champions League after recently setting a new record. The Manchester City forward made history by becoming the quickest player to net 50 goals in the tournament, achieving this feat in just 49 matches, surpassing Ruud van Nistelrooy’s previous mark of 50 goals in 62 appearances. Now, with 52 goals in 50 matches, Haaland is eyeing Lionel Messi’s record for the fastest to 60 goals, which the Argentine secured in 80 games.
Disappointment After the Draw
Despite his impressive scoring record, Haaland found little to celebrate after Manchester City faced a disappointing 2-2 draw against Monaco. The prolific striker expressed his disappointment, stating,
“It isn’t good enough. We have to try to win the next game. It is the only thing we can do.”
Haaland had scored twice in the match, giving City the lead first in the 15th minute and again shortly before halftime, but the team squandered their advantage through late penalties.
Controversial Moments
The turning point came when Eric Dier successfully converted a penalty awarded against City after a video assistant referee (VAR) review intervened due to a high boot from Nico González. City manager Pep Guardiola remained tight-lipped about the penalty decision, saying,
“I have nothing to say to the Spanish referees.”
Controversy ensued as the referee attempted to review the incident, which led to chaotic scenes on the pitch. City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma rushed to consult with coaches, inadvertently bringing the ball along and triggering a chase from Monaco players. The ensuing fracas resulted in at least one Monaco coach receiving a red card, while City’s captain, Bernardo Silva, was shown a yellow as he returned to his former club.
Guardiola’s Concerns
Guardiola’s main concern was the inability of his players to capitalize on their scoring opportunities. He remarked,
“In football, you have to win with the result. If you analyze the game, there were many things that were really good. We created chances, and even though they defended deep, we adjusted well. But when it comes down to it, we need to defend and secure the points.”
Haaland’s Season So Far
As for Haaland, his remarkable start to the season continues. With 17 goals to his name in just 10 games across club and international competitions, the only blemish on his record this season remains a 2-0 defeat against Tottenham in August when he failed to find the net.
