Gyökeres Rejects “Player Power,” Celebrates Isak’s Liverpool Transfer

Viktor Gyökeres Dismisses “Player Power” Notion

Viktor Gyökeres has recently dismissed the notion of “player power” in light of his own high-profile transfer alongside that of Swedish teammate Alexander Isak. Both strikers have made significant moves during the transfer window—Gyökeres joining Arsenal and Isak heading to Liverpool—following extensive negotiations.

Before completing the deal with Arsenal, the president of Gyökeres’ previous club, Sporting, voiced his refusal to engage in what he termed “blackmail and insults” regarding negotiations for the player.

Significance of Transfers

Isak’s transfer to Liverpool occurred on the final day of the transfer window. Both players had indicated their desire to leave their respective teams, with Gyökeres expressing well wishes to Isak for his transfer. In comments made during a national team gathering, he reflected on the significance of both players’ new roles, emphasizing the importance of their contributions in reaching Sweden’s World Cup objectives for the coming year.

“Having talented players on our national squad is always beneficial,” Gyökeres remarked. “We aim to qualify for the World Cup next year, and with our strongest players on board, we stand a better chance.”

He highlighted their ongoing collaboration on the pitch, stating their history of scoring and assisting one another in previous matches.

Player Influence and Club Decisions

As the Swedish national team prepares to kick off their qualification campaign against Slovenia this Friday, followed by a match against Kosovo on the subsequent Monday, Gyökeres’ thoughts on “player power” had an interesting context. He noted that while some players may seek to influence transfers, the reality is that if a player is not favored by their club, they often lack the authority to dictate their future.

“When a player is not valued by a club, the opposite is true; the club can essentially make any decision they wish.”

Isak’s Gratitude to Newcastle

Meanwhile, Isak expressed deep appreciation for his time at Newcastle upon finalizing his move to Liverpool, posting a heartfelt message on Instagram. He shared:

“I want to express my gratitude to my teammates, the staff, and, especially, the city of Newcastle and the incredible supporters for the three unforgettable years we shared. Together, we have made history and uplifted the club, achieving milestones like reaching the Champions League and winning our first trophy in over 70 years. Forever grateful. Thank you, Newcastle.”
